Civil Twilight is perhaps the most "literal" of the music in this collection. Taking some inspiration from spectral music, this piece is built on a series of musical structures based on the alignment or non-alignment of dynamic swelling, first out of phase, then in phase, then interrupted by a series of 3 vs. 2 phrases, then finally rendered a third time not with a change in dynamics over time, but rather static, almost hymn-like rendering that, like the central theme of the collection, meets its end in a quiet, somber peace. Members of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra provided the first performance of this piece for the recording, and I am eternally grateful for lending their voices to it.
