Rites and Passages takes a different approach to the concept of sunset. In a fast, almost violent 7/8, the music instead evokes a sense of rage as the light fades, a final stand against the oncoming darkness. A not terribly subtle homage to the riotous Stravinsky ballet, here we proceed not from the cold into the spring, but from the white hot days of late summer into the chilled sundowns of the fall-- and none too quietly. I wish to thank members of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra for their sheer determination and consumant professionalism in rendering this musical gauntlet for the recording.
